Five of Aberdeenshire's most beautiful castles you can visit during your stay at Marcliffe

Balmoral castle high ground

Few places in Scotland can rival Aberdeenshire when it comes to castles. From royal residences and grand country estates to dramatic clifftop ruins steeped in history, the region is home to some of the country's most remarkable landmarks.

Whether you're visiting for a weekend break, a golf getaway or a longer stay in the north-east, exploring a castle or two is a wonderful way to experience the region's rich heritage.

Several of our suites and rooms are named after these local icons, making them a natural place to start. Here are five historic Aberdeenshire castles, all within easy reach of Marcliffe, that are well worth adding to your itinerary.

BALMORAL CASTLE - 47 miles, 70 minutes by car

We've named our very own jewel in our crown, The Balmoral Suite, after this legendary royal castle.

Balmoral Castle has been home to the royal family since 1852.  Originally purchased by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria, the castle is a beautiful example of Scottish Baronial architecture, set within a working estate spanning more than 53,000 acres.

Today, King Charles III and Queen Camilla often spend their summers up on the estate in Royal Deeside, continuing the Royal tradition.  They are always in attendance at the annual Braemar Gathering in the first weekend of September.

The late Queen Elizabeth II had a lifelong connection to the estate and it was widely known to be her favourite residence and where she felt most at home.

Beyond the castle itself, the estate is home to a collection of historic granite cairns, often referred to as Scotland's "pyramids". Commissioned by Queen Victoria, these striking monuments were built to commemorate significant moments in the lives of the Royal Family and can be discovered on scenic walks through the estate, offering a unique glimpse into Balmoral's rich royal heritage.

When the Royal Family is not in residence, visitors can explore the grounds and gardens, while the Ballroom is the only room inside the castle open to the public. We recommend checking opening times before your visit. Ample parking is available on site.

Just across the bridge, Crathie Kirk is also well worth a visit. Every monarch since Queen Victoria has worshipped there, and it remained a place especially close to the late Queen Elizabeth II's heart during her stays at Balmoral.

DUNNOTTAR CASTLE - 17 miles, 25 minutes by car

Our Dunnottar Suite takes its name from one of Scotland's most dramatic and unforgettable landmarks. Perched atop a 160-foot cliff and surrounded on three sides by the North Sea, Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven is as breathtaking as it is historic.

For more than 1,000 years, the castle played a pivotal role in Scotland's story. Once the stronghold of the powerful Earls Marischal, it has welcomed some of the nation's most iconic figures, including William Wallace and Mary, Queen of Scots. It is perhaps best known for its heroic role in protecting the Honours of Scotland – the Scottish Crown Jewels – from Oliver Cromwell's army in the 1650s.

Today, the castle stands as a magnificent ruin, famed for its amazing coastal views.   Tours are available and highlights include the 14th century Keep, the 16th century lodging and the historical Chapel.

CRATHES CASTLE - 12 miles, 25 minutes by car

One of our Superior Rooms is named after the beautiful and enchanting Crathes Castle, set amongst sculpted yew trees, woodland walks and nature trails.

Just a short drive from Marcliffe, near Banchory, this magnificent 16th-century castle is one of the area's most magical places to explore.

The Burnett family lived in the castle for more than 350 years and had roots in the area, dating back to 1323 when Robert the Bruce granted them nearby land.

Step inside to discover a maze of turrets and towers, beautifully carved oak panels, and remarkable painted ceilings that have survived for centuries. Every room tells a story, with family portraits, fine antique furniture, and fascinating artefacts bringing the castle's rich history to life.

Tours are available and there is a charming cafe on site.

FYVIE CASTLE - 29 miles, 55 minutes by car

Our Fyvie Suite is named after the remarkable Fyvie Castle, an 800-year-old fortress rich in history, legend, and architectural beauty.

A stunning example of Scottish Baronial architecture, the castle near Turriff is home to an impressive collection of portraits, including works by Gainsborough, alongside magnificent antiques, armour, and lavish oil paintings that reflect centuries of noble life.

Ghosts, legends and folklore are all woven into the tapestry of the castle's history.  Robert the Bruce and Charles I were among its royal guests and there is a picturesque lake in the grounds and plenty of wildlife.

Guided tours are available, and the on-site cafe is the perfect place to relax.
