Every design begins with your own story, drawing inspiration from the people, places, colours, memories and moments that mean something to you. From family heritage and a much-loved landscape to a home, celebration or significant chapter in your life, these details are thoughtfully translated into a textile that is entirely your own.
The result is far more than a beautiful piece of cloth. It is the opportunity to create a new family heirloom - something with meaning and provenance that can be woven into pieces to enjoy today and passed down through generations.
About Araminta Campbell
Araminta Campbell is one of Scotland’s leading luxury textile designers and weavers, renowned for her handwoven scarves, throws and blankets, as well as bespoke tweeds and custom tartans. Rooted in Scotland’s rich textile heritage, her work brings together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, with a deep commitment to the principles of sustainable luxury.
Araminta was commissioned by the Balmoral Estate to create a royal tartan for His Majesty King Charles III, which has since been worn by members of the Royal Family. At Marcliffe, she created a bespoke Balmoral tartan, woven into the story of our hotel and featured throughout our newly refurbished Superior Rooms and Suites.
The Creative Consultation
During your consultation at Marcliffe, you’ll explore the stories, places and details that could help shape your unique textile design, from family heritage and meaningful places to favourite colours, special dates, cherished memories and how you envision your finished design being used.
A Legacy in Thread
Araminta will then bring your story to life through a distinctive, bespoke textile design. Colour, proportion, pattern and personal details are carefully considered to create a tartan or tweed that feels both beautiful and meaningful.
You’ll receive up to five CAD designs, each exploring a different variation of your textile. These can be shared by email or posted to you, alongside yarn cuttings so you can see and appreciate the colours that bring your design to life.
The Birth of a Tartan
Your chosen design will be refined collaboratively with Araminta until the final cloth is approved. Please allow up to three months for this stage.
If you have commissioned a tartan, you may also choose to have the finished design formally registered with the Scottish Tartans Authority for £200, with a certificate provided.
Once complete, we can explore bringing your design to life in cloth and creating something to treasure, from tailoring and accessories to interiors and heirloom pieces.
Cloth and finished products are quoted separately, with weaving taking up to four months and finished pieces a further four months.

PRICE - FROM £3,000
DURATION - Initial consultation one hour. Please allow 3 months for the design process and up to 4 months for the weaving of cloth or 3 months for the development of garments and accessories.
BOOKABLE FOR HOTEL GUESTS ONLY - your first private consultation takes place at Marcliffe and Araminta’s team can continue the experience with you afterwards to complete the experience, online at home.
Araminta works with clients all over the world and can arrange the first design consultation online once they have returned home. This means the Marcliffe team can introduce the experience at any point during a guest’s stay, and we can continue the relationship with them afterwards.
