ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND

Aberdeen has won "Britain in Bloom" many times and its links with the Granite trade are commemorated in its nickname "The Granite City".

The city is of great historical interest and the numerous castles in the area testify to its tempestuous past.

Scotland is renowned for it's whisky and many distilleries are close by. In the heart of the city itself His Majesty's Theatre, The Maritime Museum, The Art Gallery, and Marischal College are all worth a visit.

The most oustanding of the traditional golf clubs in the area is Royal Aberdeen Golf Club at Balgownie Links established in 1780, the 6th oldest registered club in the world.

Aberdeen is the gateway to Royal Deeside and since Balmoral Castle was built for Queen Victoria in 1855, the Royal Family have enjoyed the peace and tranquility of their summer retreat. When the family are not in residence, you can visit Balmoral and gain an insight to over a century of royal life on Deeside.

The spectacular scenery of Deeside offers some of the finest stalking, shooting and fishing in Scotland.

On the first Saturday of September, the Braemar Gathering draws thousands to the brilliant spectacle of pipe bands, the splendour of tartan and the excitement of the "heavy" sporting events.
